Founded to offset the negative impact that a cashless society is having on the charity sector, GoodBox created a device that allows people to make contactless donations via their debit or credit card. As Goodbox looked toward the future of fundraising, they needed a digital product that could manage charity events, enable digital and physical fundraising tools, track donations, and serve as accounting software. The brief was to create an integrated marketplace of fundraising channels with all the best fundraising methods in one place.

Challenge

In most charities, their fundraising tools span many different platforms. From a management perspective, this isn’t ideal. With this in mind, our goal was to design a campaign-friendly portal with everything fundraisers need in one place.

Understanding a complex charity system and the needs of various stakeholders proved to be a major challenge. Their clients include everything from national museums and major sporting events to small village churches. Through a series of workshops with both the Goodbox team and their clients, I identified various user personas and documented their needs. Then I identified the main use cases (such as setting up terminals or running a report on donations and fees) and mapped out the required steps in a user journey map. This also allowed me to map out the various data types, filters and views.

Solution

I designed the portal over a series of sprints. First I sketched out the UIs before wireframing them into a rapid clickable prototype. Then, I streamlined the wireframes and jumped into the visual design of the desktop app. I tested it on the Goodbox team to make sure it met all of their requirements and used their feedback to refine the user experience.

Results

I was able to create a fully functional prototype of the Goodbox portal for their founder to demo for investment meetings and partners. 

The portal has since been adopted by many of GoodBox’s clients who have praised its functionality and ease of use. It has also become a critical onboarding and sales tool for GoodBox themselves and an example of how they are fulfilling their mission to redefine the future of fundraising.
